Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2 September 2026
This policy covers the We Recite Together app and this website, both run by the Online Collaborative Recitation Academy under the licence of the Maknoon Society for the Memorisation of the Noble Qur'an in Saudi Arabia. The academy is free and volunteer-run: we have no advertising business, and nothing here is collected in order to be sold.
What we collect
We collect what the app needs in order to pair you with a companion and keep a record of your memorisation. Nothing more.
- Your account: your name in Arabic and in English, your email address, your gender, your date of birth, your preferred language, and a short bio if you choose to write one.
- Your learning: the passages you recite, the sessions you take part in, the evaluations a companion or teacher gives them, your attendance, your certifications, the freshness of each passage on your map, and your streaks and badges.
- Voice memos: if you or a teacher record a voice note, that recording is stored so the other can hear it.
- Your device: a notification token, so a companion's call can ring your phone, and your language and theme preferences, which stay on the device.
- Service records: the technical logs needed to run the service and investigate faults.
What we do not collect
Recitation sessions are live voice between you and your companion. We do not record them, and no copy of a session is kept.
- We never turn on your camera. The app declares the permission only because the calling library requires the declaration to exist; the app never asks for it and never uses it.
- We do not collect your contacts, your location, or an advertising identifier.
- There is no analytics SDK, no advertising SDK, and no third-party tracker in the app.
- We do not sell or rent your information to anyone, and we never will.
Why we process it
To create and maintain your account; to place you in the pool and connect your calls; to keep your memorisation map and your progress; to issue and verify certificates; and to let a supervisor administer the programme you joined. Your microphone and your notifications are used only with your permission, and you can withdraw either at any time in your device settings — the app keeps working, with less of it available to you.
Who else handles it
We use a small number of providers to run the service. They process data on our instructions and for no purpose of their own.
- Supabase — accounts, database and file storage.
- Agora — carries the live audio of a recitation call between the two devices.
- Apple and Google — sign-in, if you choose it, and delivery of push notifications.
- The Maknoon Society — the details needed to accredit and verify a certificate you have earned.
Children
The academy runs a programme for children. A child's account is opened and supervised by a parent or guardian, who is responsible for it and may ask us at any time to correct or delete it.
How long we keep it
Your account and your memorisation record are kept while your account exists, because the map is the thing you are building. Voice memos are kept while the session they belong to is relevant to the programme. Delete your account and we remove your personal information, keeping only what an issued certificate requires in order to remain verifiable, and anything the law obliges us to keep.
Your rights
You may ask us for a copy of your information, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete your account and the data with it. Write to us and we will act on it. We will not make you justify the request.
Security
Data is held on our providers' managed infrastructure and travels encrypted. No system is beyond reach, and we do not claim otherwise — but access is limited to those who administer the programme you belong to, and the men's and women's sections are kept separate throughout.
Changes to this policy
If we change it, we will change the date at the top and, where the change is significant, say so in the app.
